Do you use the Really Simple SSL plugin for your WordPress site? Do you have a notification/error like this?

"WordPress 301 redirect enabled. We recommend to enable the .htaccess redirect option on your specific setup."

You're seeing this message because you're using redirection within WordPress. For example, if you're using the Redirection plugin, you'll see some redirects if you navigate to Tools » Redirection.

Before you attempt to fix this, make sure you have FTP access to your website hosting server. Force your FTP client to show hidden files.

  1. Navigate to Settings » SSL
  2. Click the Settings tab
  3. Toggle the "Enable .htaccess 301 redirect" switch to On:
    enable 301 .htaccess redirection
  4. Click Save

If you have redirection problems after making this change, and you aren't able to access your WordPress dashboard to remedy the situation, you can back out this change:

  1. Transfer a copy of .htaccess from your top-level web-hosting folder (e.g. /public_html/).
  2. Edit the file in NotePad++, TextWrangler, or NotePad. Remove these lines that were added by the plugin:
    # BEGIN rlrssslReallySimpleSSL rsssl_version[3.2.2]

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{HTTP:X-Forwarded-Proto} !https
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]

    # END rlrssslReallySimpleSSL
  3. Prevent the plugin from making changes to the .htaccess file by editing wp-config.php in the same folder, and adding this line:
    define( 'RLRSSSL_DO_NOT_EDIT_HTACCESS', TRUE );
    Like so:
wp_config.php mod for Really Simple SSL plugin
